A consultant is an asset for targeted expertise whereas the contractor is there to increase a team throughput.

Bottom line

A consultant is an expert there to teach and become useless.

That doesn’t mean he can not be a jack of all trades and be helpful on many topics, but it’s mainly filling a gap, getting your employees up to speed, and keeping your time to market low.

On his end, the value he brings comes also from the variety of experiences he’s exposing himself to.
